The training environment

The department combines a busy clinical genetics service with a comprehensive genomic diagnostic laboratory and an active research programme. Residents work across all three. In practice this means seeing a patient in clinic, following the sample through the laboratory, taking part in variant interpretation, and contributing to the report that returns to the referring clinician.

Breadth comes from the referral base: rare disease and dysmorphology, cancer genetics both germline and somatic, prenatal and reproductive genetics, and neurological, endocrine, metabolic and immunological presentations. The diagnostic catalogue includes 58 phenotype-driven NGS panels alongside cytogenomic and targeted molecular methods.

Medical Genetics Residency

A four-year specialty programme aligned with Türkiye’s national Medical Genetics curriculum.

Residency training integrates clinical genetics, genomic diagnostics, laboratory medicine, case-based learning and research. Residents assess patients in the outpatient clinics, take part in genetic counselling, work through the diagnostic laboratory, and carry cases from referral to interpretation and report.

Training is longitudinal rather than modular. Clinical and laboratory responsibilities run alongside one another throughout the programme, so that a resident learns to read a variant in the context of a phenotype they have themselves assessed.

Laboratory Training

At least 18 months of diagnostic laboratory rotation across the four-year programme.

Residents train across next-generation sequencing, molecular diagnostics, cytogenetics and cytogenomics, prenatal genetics, and molecular oncology and haematology workflows. The aim is working competence in each domain: understanding what a method can and cannot detect, and what that means for a report.

Because the department holds these methods in one service, residents see the same clinical question approached by different techniques — and learn when orthogonal confirmation is required.

Structured Teaching

Scheduled seminars, case presentations and current-literature review.

The academic programme runs on a scheduled cycle of theoretical sessions, case presentations and current-literature review. Coverage spans both flagship research programmes, with substantial attention to genomic medicine and molecular oncology alongside rare disease.

Residents present their own cases and lead literature sessions. The intent is to build the habit of appraising evidence critically, and of stating clearly what a paper does and does not establish.

Clinical Rotations

External rotations as set by the national specialty curriculum.

Residency training includes clinically relevant external rotations in accordance with the national specialty curriculum. Rotation requirements are defined nationally, not by the department, and this page describes them only as they apply to training here.

  • Medical Oncology — 1 month
  • Haematology — 1 month
  • Obstetrics & Gynaecology — 1 month
  • Paediatrics — 3 months: Child Neurology, Metabolism, and Endocrinology (one month each)

Research & Thesis Training

Project development, literature appraisal, reporting and manuscript preparation with faculty mentorship.

Residents are encouraged to develop thesis and project-based research with faculty mentorship and methodological support. Much of the department’s published work has residents as first or contributing authors, and thesis projects are chosen to sit within one of the two flagship programmes.

Supervision covers the whole arc: framing an answerable question, assembling and describing a cohort, interpreting variants defensibly, and writing the work up for publication.
